City lads to participate in climate change conference at Copenhagen

A few days from now on Dec 7 to Dec 18, 2009 when thousands of prominent ennvironmentalists converge in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the Climate Change Conference, two young champions from Pune will be among them.

Master Roopak Karulkar 15 years old and Miss Trupti Joshi 14 years
old are attending the conference and will be visiting many organizations with similar interests, as well as various schools to encourage students and adults to take collective action to address Climate Change.

The “Climate Change Student Ambassadors representing GCA & Neeti ” are the winners of the Go-Dac (Gaming Olympiad for Disaster and Climate Change) competition held in Pune in Sep-Oct 2009, jointly conducted by Global Challenge Award , USA, a non-profit organization that conducts an annual online high school climate change response program and Neeti Solutions, Pune, India a socially committed
enterprise.
Neeti works in areas of computer based training for professionals and children using virtual reality and 3D simulation to create applications for climate change, disaster and emergency management.

Dr. Parag Mankeekar: Founder and Director of Neeti Solutions, one of GCA's board members and an Ashoka Fellow and Dr. Manasi Abhyankar: Neeti Coordinator of Children & Challenges, and Asia Coordinator for GCA,will be participating in the Copenhagen conference as mentors.

Winning GCA Participants' Comments:-

Subsequent to the program,students have shared amongst themselves,as to how the Global Challenge Award Program has made a difference to them. As the program name suggests, winning students are from different countries. Working across cultures,countries and time zones has been a great learning as can be seen by the comments below. A rare opportunity while at school.

Global Challenge Award students stay in touch and share their experiences long after the program. They tell us and each other how the Global Challenge Award has made a difference to them. As the program name suggests, students come from all over the world to work across cultures, countries and times zones. As a result, they learn
from each other and from the experience. Their comments below show why Global Challenge is a rare opportunity for global learning during high school.

Through this project, what I enjoy best is that I feel that I can do something practically to protect the environment rather than just say it literally. I also feel the pleasure of communication and teamwork. It’s really nice to have peers work together with you and solve some problems, sharing difficulty and the joy of completing the work. I came into the program with great ambitions and all of my expectations were met. Personally, I enhanced my strength in communication skills. This is what David HU from USA feels.

The platform to apply my textbook/theoretical knowledge and what I have learnt in college into practical applications to alleviate environmental problems is the greatest motivation for me to join the Global Challenge Award and stay with the program. GCA not only provides the opportunity to learn more about science and technology through the STEM explorations, it also provides a chance to make friends internationally and understand the life’s of other students in other countries. Results of Gaming Olympiad for Disaster & Climate Contest

Thanks to everyone for making the prize distribution ceremony of GO-DaC one of the best ever. The results of most awaited GO-DaC i.e. Gaming Olympiad For Disaster & Climate contest declared. The overwhelming response for contest was obvious as the contest has much potential.

The evening of 9Th October 2009 saw a beautiful prize distribution ceremony where Mr. Michael Newbill,Economic & Political Observer for US Consulate,Mumbai was the chief guest at the ceremony. The consistent applause of the overwhelmed parents moved one and all.

Master Roopak Karulkar from Abhinav English Medium, Pune and Miss. Trupti Joshi from Mar Ivanios Convent , Nigdi were declared as Children Climate Change Ambassador and would represent Global Challenge Award and Neeti Solutions in the International Conference on Climate Change COP15to be held in Copenhagen,Denmark in Dec2009.

In a magnanimous gesture, the Guest of Honor, Mr. Manish Sabade announced that the Guardian Travels would sponsor airfare for two winners.

Four Years of Global Challenge Impact

The overall impact of GCA can be measured in both quantitative and qualitative ways. During the last 4 years, more than 6000 students from 50 countries registered, a figure which illustrates the popularity achieved by the program. GCA has also made grants of about $200,000 to these students in the form of college scholarships and training opportunities. These personal gains have been important to students, who continuously benefit from their GCA experience.
Using technology, GCA is helping children to become change agents for a better future. Youth gain skills that help them aspire to careers in international affairs, the green economy and entrepreneurship. Importantly, 85% of GCA students have shown continued commitment to global and climate issues after completing a GCA program. This impact on their awareness of climate change is multiplied by their concrete actions that are mitigating and addressing climate change effects around the world.
GCA's team-based experiences improve a student's confidence for solving local as well as global problems. Students learn to think outside-the-box and see that their creative global warming solutions can move from idea to reality. Students learn to work in cooperative teams, how to coordinate with each other and how to communicate.
Global Challenge thus has a three-fold impact on students: increasing climate change awareness and action, resulting in personal gains and gaining experience in global virtual teamwork.
Participating in GCA provides youth with many keys to success while engaging them in creative thinking and action for a Greener world.

Dear everyone, we’ve written several times about the Global Challenge Award program and how it works. The name itself suggests that students are involved from all over the globe. We’ve had tremendous response from students who are full of enthusiasm and potential. Students in GCA work together to achieve socially responsible goals that they set for themselves!
Global Challenge Award believes that with the advent of 21st century technology youth are increasingly driving change around the globe. GCA uses the Internet, learning networks, and a fast growing web of educational connections to attract students to its annual competitions. Thousands have participated since the GCA’s inception in 2005.
From 2006 up to 2008 we had a continuously increasing response from all over the globe. The numbers tell a success story about the GCA Program. Tell someone you know about GCA today and help save the world!
